Every Exonian has experienced laying their head into their pillow, dreading the 7 a.m. wake up ahead after a long night of studying. They’re not sure that their body has the energy to get through another five classes the next day, and just need a break. Then, their eyes fly open. They grab their phone, and turn off the alarm. They don’t have a reserve format tomorrow — their history class isn’t meeting.

As the countdown to winter break begins, new and returning students are buzzing with excitement for holiday festivities. Although the two-week period between Thanksgiving and Christmas break is known as a whirlwind of exams, many dorms nevertheless go all out in celebrating the season. From Secret Santa gift exchanges to angeling to even wrapping fellow roommates like human presents, each dorm has its own way of expressing the holiday spirit.

On Jan. 13, the White House announced the 306 recipients of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching with the Academy’s very own John Blackwell, an instructor in physics and astronomy, being one of those honored.

Upper Andrew Gould, an advanced team member of Phillips Exeter Academy’s Daniel Webster Debate Society (DWDS), qualified for the 2025 World Universities Debating Championship, which will be held this spring in Malaysia. Gould will compete against some of the best youth debaters in the world, where he will be one of the eight debaters representing America.

Annually, Elm Street Dining Hall is adorned with red lanterns, posters, and Chinese characters representing good luck. Last year, traditional Chinese dragon dancers entranced onlookers enjoying their meals, students clamored for cans of bubble tea, and Asian snacks littered on the counters.

You trudge into your math class, and see the dark cloud around your classmates’ faces, all of whom are holding a stapled collection of papers covered in red pen.

On Oct. 25, the trustees and principal Rawson took the stage, honoring law professor Jim Coleman ‘66 with the John and Elizabeth Phillips Award. After his speech describing his educational journey in the assembly hall, Coleman joined students in the Elting Room to give advice.
