Imagine a group of student-athletes who want to train in the gym for their upcoming season. They make spare time to go to Downer by finishing their homework on Saturday morning. However, as they scan their LionCard to enter the athletic facilities, the doomed sound of denial hits them; the red light flashes as the notes descend condescendingly. They stare back in disbelief; just yesterday, on Friday evening, they had trained till 8 P.M. Why is it closed on Saturday at 6:00 p.m.?

On Oct. 19, the boy’s varsity water polo team played Deerfield for a home game over parents’ weekend. Exeter dominated the entire game, consistently leading and ending with a crushing 21-4 victory.

Your pencil trembles as you frantically scribble facts about Otto Von Bismarck in your history in-class writing test. At this point, you don’t even know what your thesis is—or whether you even had one in the first place. Walking out of the classroom, you begin speculating about your grade; hopefully it’s not below a B-.

For the second week of Alumni Advice, we have Hiro Kuwana ‘16, an entrepreneur and co-founder of Flybyrd, a tech startup that analyzes audio and video conversations to find data trends and provide customer insight.

Over three hundred delegates from many schools in New England rush onto Exeter’s campus for PEAMUN each year. A strong community, Exeter’s Model United Nations runs many committees dedicated to simulating real-world problems. Additionally, students learn valuable academic and life skills while competing at the highest level.

Every Monday at 7 p.m., Catholic Exonians (CE) meet on the second floor of Phillips Church for activities ranging from attending Mass to field trips to nearby churches. For many, CE is more than just a club; it is a family of people with shared values that help each other through times of struggle.

On Friday, Oct. 4, students gathered in the library to display a LEGO replica of the Class of 1945 Library.

On Oct. 17, Exeter’s fall 2024 Lamont Poet, Marilyn Nelson, read her poetry to students in the Assembly Hall. After the recitation, Nelson signed students’ copies of her collections and returned the next day for a Q&A session during the Department Meeting block.

On Oct. 15, author, businessman, and alumnus Tom Steyer ‘75 delivered an assembly speech discussing the importance of improving green energy before opening the floor for audience questions. His book was available for students to pick up for free, and he signed copies after the assembly.

Perhaps you’ve seen him nerding out about Latin with his friends, playing Clash Royale with his less famous counterpart, Jinmin Lee, or walking down the paths with a certain pretentiousness in his gait.

On Oct. 26, the boys’ varsity soccer team traveled to St. Paul’s School for a seasonal game. Although they initially found it challenging to pierce their opponent’s defense, the tides of the game changed after their first goal, allowing them to finish with a 4-1 victory.

Imagine writing for more than ten hours for your history paper in the library on a Sunday. Your back aches, your posture crumples, and you feel the wave of fatigue running through your limbs. Does this seem natural?

For our third week of Alumni Advice, we have Ms. Suzi Kwon Cohen ‘88, who is a trustee at the Academy. After graduating from Exeter and attending Brown University, she later received her MBA from Stanford Business School.

Whether leading poetry in Latin and Greek in the classroom, hustling on the varsity football and baseball fields, making case theory in Mock Trial, or pleasing everyone with his singing, senior Caspar Bailey is an important figure on campus.

On Oct. 25, the trustees and principal Rawson took the stage, honoring law professor Jim Coleman ‘66 with the John and Elizabeth Phillips Award. After his speech describing his educational journey in the assembly hall, Coleman joined students in the Elting Room to give advice.

On Sept. 17, Exonians took a day off from classes for Academy Life Day for their annual dorm-bonding activities. Some dorms chose to stay on campus, while others traveled by bus to places near the Academy. After their plans, each dorm hosted a dorm-wide lunch.

On Wednesday, September 11, Exeter’s varsity field hockey team played a home game against the New Hampton School. Through the hard work involved in many drills and during preseason, the team overcame in-game challenges and defeated their opponents with a final score of 2-1.

Being busy does not justify neglect. Exonians stress about grades, sports, and clubs, leading them to forget the very basic etiquette that helps our school function. Two issues illustrate this idea: not returning dining hall silverware/bowls and forgetting to hand in sports uniforms. Not only do these two problems strain Exeter financially, but they also cause faculty to spend valuable time cleaning up after the students’ neglect.

On the way to the athletic facilities, one has to pass by the majestic Cilley Hall. Gazing at this magnificent sight, one can notice the first-floor proctor room on the left side of the main entrance; a large “OPEN” sign salutes the eye. How could this neon sign not spark some curiosity about what is inside?

On Friday, Sept. 15, Dartmouth professors Tarek El-Ariss and Susannah Heschel spoke in a moderated panel discussion about their recent intellectual and curricular collaboration at the university. El-Ariss and Heschel are the current chairs of Dartmouth’s Middle Eastern Studies and Jewish Studies programs, respectively. For the past year, they have collaborated to create a course on promoting open dialogue about sensitive topics among students of all backgrounds. After the panel, the professors encouraged the audience to ask questions.

Construction for rebuilding the new Wetherell dining hall and renovating Langdell and Merrill Halls began last school year. Although students expected to move into their new dorms at the beginning of the school year, construction delays have pushed back the move-in deadline for those in Langdell Hall, who are staying in a hotel near campus. Merrill Hall is also undergoing final renovation steps, even though students have already moved in.

On Tuesday, Sept. 10, as the first guest speaker of the year, entrepreneur and Exeter alumna Sara Jane Ho ‘03 addressed the Academy at assembly. After her self-reflective speech describing her experience at Exeter and sitting in on English and History classes, Ho held a Q&A session in the Elting room and gave her signature to students who picked up her book Mind Your Manners.
