A legion of Exonians roars as a group of dancers rush onto the stage. They order themselves into a neat arrangement, beginning their act. Rhythmic clapping and stomping echoes through the room, vibrating the floor, hypnotizing the crowd.

Kindness, cookies and travel: three words that could very well be used to describe Instructor of Health Brandon Thomas. With his return to campus following a spring sabbatical in which he traveled the world, Thomas came back with many experiences and lessons to share.

When Exonians crave a quick breather from their familiar dorms and classrooms, they head into downtown Exeter. Their favorite drinks or menu items refresh them in the spring and warm them in the fall and winter, a stroll down Swasey Parkway offers calm before exams, and a fifteen-minute trip to Walgreens doubles as a precious chance to catch up with friends. The town, as the haven of these beloved off-campus hotspots, is central to Exonian life.

A core time period at Exeter is the two week stretch between the end of Thanksgiving break and the start of Christmas break. For a plethora of reasons, Exonians have come to label that interval as “Hell Weeks.” However, Exeter’s opinion on the topic isn’t so consistent, with the description coming under question and rejection from many students.

Deep within the Academy Building on Friday night, senior Jacques Pierre Leleux marches into the Latin Study with a toga and golden wreath atop his hair. He owns the room; eyes turn as he artfully diagrams the Battle of Actium with simplicity yet accuracy. As Leleux performs the secen fo battle with unrivaled vigor, his fellow club members rave with enthrallment. An accomplished two-year senior, Jacques is known across campus for his leadership in theater, classics, history, and—most of all—his conquering smile. Throughout his life, Leleux has also conquered many territories. “I’m kind of from all over,” Leleux said. “I was born in London, and since then I’ve lived in New Orleans, Alexandria, Richmond, Utah, North Carolina, and now New Hampshire for Exeter. Moving around a lot has given me a flavor of a lot of different places. I have a lot of friends from many different areas, but my deep, long-term connections lie really with my family.”

On Friday, Oct. 4, students gathered in the library to display a LEGO replica of the Class of 1945 Library.

Since becoming the President of the Student Council last spring, senior Cam Khater has focused his attention on planning events for the student body to enjoy. “Student Council hosted a food truck event last spring, which was a really big success,” Khater explained. “Looking forward, we are working on numerous events — Halloween festivities, EA, critically acclaimed boba events, all of which should be really fun.”

Every Thursday from 6:15 to 7:00 p.m., Pinoy Society meets to bond as a community through fun events.

This past Family Weekend, many students found it hard to miss the large, flashy poster in the EPAC commons that appeared over family weekend. This was the first public detailing of the Academy Building renovation that will take place from 2025 to 2027, and allowed for students and families to get an idea of how it might look.

Every year, for a weekend in September, campus teems with the life of its current, and past generations. Often seen through classroom doors and walking the paths, alumni return to campus not just to reminisce on their time at the Academy and reflect on all its change, but also for an important mission: Exeter Leadership Weekend. This year, it was held on the weekend of Sept. 20.

It is not often that you can spectate swordfighting and students conversing in togas, or hear distant Latinate shouts and fervent Ciceronian oratories — all at once.

In July 2024, Kristyn Van Ostern ‘96 was sworn into her four-year tenure as President of the Academy’s Board of Trustees. Van Ostern was chosen for this position through a vote conducted by the Trustees in Oct. 2023. Before taking on this role, Van Ostern joined the Trustees in 2017 and has served as the Chair of the Budget and Finance (B+F) Committee since 2019.
